Analog and Digital Communication | Communication Signal

The main feature or motive in data communication system is transferring data in between two  or  more devices. Data can be of different types - audio, video, text, graphics, etc. In computer network, data is sent in the form of electrical signal. Electrical signal is of two types - Analog signal and Digital signal.

Analog Signal

We commonly used Analog signal in our daily life. It mainly used for voice communication (e.g., telephonic conversation). It is mainly consists in the combination of Electromagnetic Wave. Electromagnetic Waveform mainly measures with the help of the following three features -

Amplitude: Amplitude is used to measure the power or the range of the signal. As the height of the wave is high, the signal will more powerful.

Frequency: Frequency is the ability that signal creates a total number of wave form per second.

Phase: The phase involves the relationship between the position of the amplitude crests and troughs of two wave forms. Phase can be measured in distance, time or degrees.

Advantages
1) Analog signal is very useful for sending audio and video data.
2) Analog signal can be received from any part of the world.
3) Analog signal is not being effected by noise of other signals.

Digital Signal

Digital signal is mainly used to communicate between computers. Digital signal is consists of two Binary Digits 0 and 1. Every digital signals is sent in the form of 0 and 1.
Digital signal can be classified with two different types - current state encoding and  state transition encoding.
In current state encoding, the signal value 0 or 1 is decided on the basis of flow of voltage on every moment.
In state transition encoding, the transformation of high voltage to low voltage we assume as 1 and the transformation of low voltage to high voltage we assume as 0.

Advantages
1) Digital circuits are cheaper and easy to design as compare to Analog signal.
2) Digital circuits are more reliable.
3) Digital signal has a high level of accuracy.

Differences between Analog and Digital Signal

Analog Signal
Digital Signal
1) It is suitable for sending audio and video data.
1) It is suitable for sending Text data.
2) It consists with electromagnetic wave.
It consists with binary digits 0 and 1.
3) It is costlier than Digital Signal.
3) It is cheaper than Analog signal.
